Soil testing is the most important guide to the profitable and proper application of nutrients. Depending upon your region in the United States, a surface (0-6 inch) and a subsurface (6-24 inch) sample should be collected. In areas with low rainfall, such as the Northern Great Plains, a surface and subsurface sample should be collected. In areas with high rainfall, such as the Southern Great Plains, a surface sample will be adequate for nutrient analysis. At the SGS Brookings facility, a nitrate nitrogen analysis of the surface and subsurface sample will be included with the packages listed below. The following soil tests are offered in our laboratories:
- Basic Soil Test Water pH, phosphorus, and potassium, organic matter, and nitrate nitrogen.
- Standard Soil Test ater pH, buffer pH, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, nitrate nitrogen, organic matter, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and base saturation. (Ideal for variable rate technology.)
- Ideal for corn: Water pH, Buffer pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, Nitrate Nitrogen, Sulfur, Zinc, Copper, soluble salts
- Ideal for Soybeans: Water pH, Buffer pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, soluble salts, carbohydrates
- Ideal for small grains: Water pH, Buffer pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, Nitrate Nitrogen, Sulfur, soluble salts, chloride, Copper
- Advanced Soil Test Water pH, buffer pH, nitrate nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, organic matter, cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation, zinc, manganese, sulfur, boron, copper, iron, and sodium.
- Individual Analysis Bray 1 phosphorus, olsen phosphorus, Mehlich-3 phosphorus, Nitrate Nitrogen, potassium, water/buffer pH, calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, sulfur, chloride, boron, organic matter, soluble salts, cation exchange capacity, % base saturation, sodium absorption ratio, particle size analysis, carbonates, soybean cyst nematode.
