Alvey Laboratory, Inc.

From the start in 1976, Alvey Laboratory, Inc. has provided high quality and timely laboratory services to the agriculture sector. Producers quickly discovered the value of accurate and comprehensive soil fertility testing accompanied by recommendations. The scope of work expanded to environmental and regulatory lab services as well as contract field research. Today four companies comprise Alvey Laboratory, Inc., including the original facility in Belleville, Illinois, Alvey Agricultural Research in Carlyle, Illinois, and Mowers Soil Testing Plus, Inc. and CropWatch in Toulon, Illinois. These companies provide a complete range of agricultural analytical services, GPS soil sampling, fertility management, pest management, yield analysis, environmental/regulatory management, and contract field research. Even oil analysis is available through Mowers.

SGS Brookings

The company originally started by Tim Gutormson and Sharon Hanson in the basement of their house near Bruce, South Dakota in July 1993. In November of 1994 the business moved to Brookings South Dakota and leased 4,000 sq. ft. from the Brookings Area Development Corporation.

In September 1997 the business relocated into a new 10,000 sq. ft. facility with expanded germination, vigor, herbicide, wet laboratory, and purity testing areas.

In November of 1998 an 8,000 sq. ft. addition was completed for expanded soybean and purity testing.

Nov. 2001 a 10,000 sq. ft. addition was completed to expand DNA and transgenic testing services. In May 2007 Tim Gutormson and Sharon Hanson sold Mid-West Seed Services, Inc. to SGS of Geneva Switzerland. SGS renamed the company SGS Mid-West Seed Services, Inc. in 2008. SGS MWSS employs more than 20 full-time seed analysts, ten of which are Registered Seed Technologists (RSTs); three Registered Genetic Technologists (RGTs), five Certified Genetic Technologists (CGTs), three Certified Viability Technologists (CVTs), and one Certified Purity Technologist (CPT).

SGS MWSS is an ISTA accredited Laboratory, as well as an ISO9001 certified company. Tim Gutormson now serves as the Vice President and Regional Business Manager.

New to SGS MWSS for 2008 is a fully operational soil testing lab. Analysis offered include pH, organic matter, all nutrients (major, minor, and secondary), soluble salts, and a measure of carbonates in soil. Fertility recommendations are available up on request. SGS MWSS also offers custom soil sampling and variable rate prescription writing services.
